The ISA Level 1 flat water SUP qualification is aimed at anyone wishing to gain the skills and specific knowledge required to instruct stand up paddle boarding in flat water locations. Individuals will develop the ability to plan and safely carry out the basic elements of paddling, while at the same time ensuring that the session is safe and fun.
2018 Dates: 23rd and 24th June
Candidates don’t need to hold any previous coaching qualifications to attend the course. However, anyone who holds a current surf coaching qualification will find it beneficial. It is required to have at least 40 hours personal SUP experience and be able to perform the following skills on a Paddleboard:
• Demonstrate short paddle strokes
• Perform step back turns
• Reverse paddle turns
• Paddleboard in reverse
• 360 turns
• Sprint paddling
To complete the level 1 flat water SUP qualification, candidates must carry out the following:
• Attend the 2 day SUP coaching course.
• Demonstrate personal paddling ability.
• Complete 10 coaching hours with different groups under the guidance of a qualified SUP coach.
• Complete post course workbook documenting all session records of your coaching hours, including lesson plans, venue analysis and evaluations.
• Hold a current in date water safety qualification.
Instructor candidates will give lecturers, coach other students during the course. Instructors will be assessed throughout the course –paddles skills, safety, group control and general SUP knowledge. There is a exam and paddle test on the water. The courses are divided up between the classroom and on the water. We cover site assessment, teaching psychology, weather, tides, rescue techniques and teaching drills. We talk through equipment so when you leave the course you will be fully loaded with SUP knowledge.
