It’s been a wonderful season so far for Yvette Curtis in her Wave Wahine world. Firstly, there was the Oceanfest Wave Wahine Summer Slide Surf Comp, the first all female surf competition in the UK. Yvette organised this remarkable event in memory of Vikki Worthington, a very special friend to many of us here in Croyde.

The comp took place over June weekend of Gold Coast Oceanfest and was epically supported by locals and visitors alike.

The first day featured an open participation day of surf sessions for novices right up to green wave standard. All the sessions were coached and mentored by our Surf South West female instructors and we felt honoured to be included. A Nalu Beads workshop, beach art and conservation work were also very much part of the day, even though the weather was not the kindest.

Day 2 was the main contest day with multiple divisions and age categories all of which were subscribed in full. Local participation was strong although competitors flew in from as far afield as Portugal, and from down the road in Cornwall. The high standard of surfing amazed onlookers and judges alike, especially in the the longboard category.

The day culminated the Tag Team Vikki Worthington Cup, a special part of the event providing much group healing, smiles and headstands.

The whole event stood out as an exceptional weekend, and not just because of the inspirational surfing and sportswomanship. The friendship, support, joy and pure sense of fun and community that everyone brought to the event was the true star of the show, and we think Vikki would have loved it.

But our Wonder Wahine did not to stop there.…

A few weeks later, Yvette was at yet another event, the Bright Futures Festival in Bude, Cornwall. Here she had been invited to make a presentation as an Environmenstrual Ambassador for the South West. Speaking alongside such notables as Chris Hines, MBE co-founder of Surfers Against Sewage, and Rob Hopkins Founder of Transition Network, Yvette entertained listeners with her informative advise on how women can live more sustainably.
