Big news! Jack and Lewis have recently qualified to become trainers and assessors for our RLSS National Vocational Beach Lifeguard course. They’ll be running all our initial five day courses in 2022, and they are already selling out fast. Beach Lifeguard Trainers With Will and John already qualified as RLSS assessors, we now have four fully qualified RLSS Beach Lifeguard trainers on our team. Added to this our seven ISA Level 2 qualified surf coaches and our 4 adaptive surfing qualified coaches and we feel mighty proud of our team’s expertise and experience. We don’t know of any other UK school/ training centre that has as many highly qualified instructors, do you? Who is the RLSS Beach Lifeguard Qualification aimed at? The course is open to anyone looking to gain an internationally recognised beach lifeguard qualification. It’s also an essential requirement for anyone looking to go on to work as a surf instructor. What qualities make a good Beach Lifeguard? A Beach Lifeguard should be:- A strong communicator Excellent team player Able to lead and always anticipate problems Extremely observant A strong swimmer and confident water person. Calm and have patience (as when teaching swim lessons) Aware of what’s going on around them at all times Attentive to detail Safety conscious at all times Calm in an emergency How fit do you need to be to train as a Beach Lifeguard? Good general strength and fitness is required. Most importantly you need to be a strong swimmer, able to do a 400m pool swim in 8 mins. Is there an age restriction? Anyone over 16 years can become a Beach Lifeguard. Do Beach Lifeguards have to be surfers? No. What are the course requirements? You have to complete both the practical and theory modules. This means spending time in the sea as well as completing classroom based theory sessions. The course is based on the RLSS Beach Lifeguard Qualification manual which is included in the course fee. You need to pass all the modules to gain your qualification. Candidates will be assessed on the final day by one of our RLSS assessors – Jack, Lewis, Will or John. They’ll be looking for good knowledge and understanding of the following: Lifeguard Theory CPR First Aid Open water & rescue skills Spinal management Why choose SSW gain your Beach Lifeguard qualification? All our Lifeguard courses can also be combined with our Surfing England/I.S.A. Level Instructor courses too. These are held over 2 days on the weekend after each of the RLSS courses.
